Woodham Mortimer 2nd X1 v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 12 Aug 2023 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 59 runs

Match report With games rapidly running out, there's surely some sort of cliche about them now all being relegation 6 pointers. After a couple of very tough opponents, a midtable oppo possibly presented a chance to get some points even on the road. The new captain continued the traditions of the season, lost the toss and we found ourselves put into bat.

With the pitch and the bowling proving variable and occasionally quite slow (not to mention the outfield which didn't appear to have been cut since June) John and Jim often found it tough to time it to the boundary from the off. A few looseners were dispatched but few made it to the boundary, lots of running required (yay). After John had top edged to covers, Jim had somehow got out (stumped or bowled, still not certain) and Matty played across the line to be bowled, a partnership was needed. Luckily, Ruwan and Alex joined the party. Both lefties hitting right out of the middle and accelerating the score nicely. Ruwan unfortunately fell on the boundary which left Alex chasing his maiden century with help from Ben, Ed and Robin. Having set off for 2 after a shot that definitely was a 1 in the final over, he was run out at the second attempt by the wicket keeper. The most reluctant decision ever given by the captain at square leg. One final 6 from Robin left us on 253-7, with some great contributions through the innings from all. With the bowling available, we felt confident at tea.

Into the field under the sun we went, with the Baker duo opening the bowling. Both kept the openers scoring options down but the home side reached 50 without loss and were looking to start to accelerate. However they hadn't anticipated the return of Jack Reilley. Fresh from one net session in 2 years he was right back into the groove taking 3 wickets across his 2 spells with his returning pace and accuracy. At the other end, Ruwan continued his form with the bat, using his usual craft and guise to take 4 wickets including the last wicket in the final over. Robin and Ed returned to take a wicket each, ably supported by Dan, Alex and Hari who all kept the batters honest with good lines and lengths. All bowlers backed well in the field with vocal support and lots of hard chases to keep the run rate down.

A great team win to set us up for the remaining 3 games and hopefully a successful relegation avoidance 🏏
