Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Theydon Bois on Sat 30 Apr 2022 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Broomfield 2s Vs Theydon Bois
Final warm up match before the league games turned out to be a nail biter. Theydon batted first and got off to a slow start, 27/1 after 10 overs with debutant Ben Plumstead taking a catch off Noah. Liam and Robin took over and two wickets from the captain further limited their ambition leaving them 60/3 at the 20 over mark. Their number 5 then decided to take the game by the scruff of the neck as he went through the gears getting his team to 105 after 30, making his half century in the process, then he accelerated further until opening bowler Thomas, in his second spell, sent his off stump spinning but only after he made 84. Nick and Thomas kept the rest in check after, sharing three more wickets, but the damage had been done, Theydon finishing on a respectable 178.
With 4.5 an over needed a solid start was vital but Stuart didn't get the memo as he pulled his second ball to square leg for a duck (he then had the cheek to moan about his 28 over umpiring spell that followed). That put a lot of pressure on John's shoulders, but thankfully that was one of the few areas of his body not causing him pain so he was able to carry the team admirably. Liam was playing a conservative innings at the other end, perhaps sensing that his runs would be needed later in the match. John eventually went for a well hit 35 which brought in the big hitting Noah. Noah raced to the mid-20s with a series of big 4s but his confidence got the better of him as he holed out in the deep. Liam was then joined by Abhi, who stayed around for a while but couldn't really help the score along. Ben Baines then joined the party but again couldn't make an impact before he departed. Liam had by now reached his 50 and seemed to be well set. With 8 overs to go we still needed over 50 runs but with Liam still there we had hope. The tail had to help keep Liam on strike by taking advantage of the deep field settings for easy singles, but being tail enders they struggled to make it happen. Ben P strode out, looking to make an impression, and he certainly did by being out 3 balls in a row, only to be reprieved by the first 2 being no balls. Robin then came in and kept Liam going with a couple of singles then a 4 to inch us ever closer to the finish line but also succumbed to a catch in the deep. However, what the opposition didn't realise as Robin was replaced by Nick, was that the unassuming Clark Kent of cricket was for many years the opening bat for the first team. So when Liam went in the 38th over having got so near yet so far with his 65 it was time for Nick to reveal his true identity as superman, which he duly did with a clipped 4. Into the last over and Thomas got the man of steel back on strike. A couple of kryptonite balls kept our hero in check but with 3 needed to win off the last two Nick drove a straight delivery, cape flowing behind him as he struck, and the resulting 4 runs got us over the line with a ball to spare.
A keenly fought match against a worthy foe and a great win under pressure for the team that will hopefully stand us in good stead as we start the season.
