Match report BCC 2s vs Hornchurch Athletic 3s

Tough opposition, they'd played 6 and won 6 and we struggled to get 11 players out so the omens weren't good, however a late response from C O'Riordan gave us reason for optimism. Despite following on from the hottest day of the year conditions were wet and windy so when Robin won the toss it was a natural choice to bowl, irrespective of the fact that we only had one proven bat. The captain opened and continued to thrill the crowds with his economy rate, which allowed for good work at the other end as Dan Knight picked up his first adult wickets with two off his initial three over spell. Issac was then brought on and the Magician delivered as he picked up his maiden wicket, which, to the batman's credit, he walked on despite Isaac's witchcraft causing the ball to hit pad, then glove, then back of bat, before finally ending up in the safe hands of WK Mark Tweed. We had them 33/3 off only 14 overs, probably not where the top of the table side expected to be. However they are top for a reason and they batted deep; the next pairing knuckled down and started to take the game away from us as we seemed to run out of steam, our young bowling attack evidently feeling the difference from their usual 20 overs. A very well taken catch from Isaac's dad, Dave, off the welcome return of Michael Sawyer, then a clean bowled victim from Jamie Tweed, who's bowling continues to make an impact, added some gloss to proceedings but their No. 4 carried his bat for 145 to leave them with the daunting total of 253/5 after 45 overs.

When there's an O'Riordan involved there's hope, especially if the O'Riordan in question had a boozy BBQ to get to at 5pm. He showed his impatience from the very first ball as he raced to his 50 after only 5 overs. Debutant Dave showed that class is permanent with his able support at the other end . He went for 14 which brought in Jim, but he could only really stand back and watch as the hungry Chris smashed the ball to all sides; yes he rode his luck a little, a couple of balls coming down from a great height were dropped, but with the sheer shock and awe going on the fielder's can't be blamed. Chris made his century with ease and looked well set to chase down the 250 almost single handedly. However, he was stopped in his tracks by an erroneous call from the umpire, supposedly caught behind but we could all see the big plume of dust from the bat hitting the ground which accounted for the noise. Our Achilles had taken an arrow to the ankle and despite some gesticulation and looks of innocence there was nothing that could be done, a pill made all the more bitter to swallow as the opposition made a big fuss about a no ball call later in the innings which resulted in a not out; they conveniently forgot this injustice as they jumped around the wicket whooping and shouting their protests. Nevertheless with less than 90 to get and 8 wickets still in hand we really should have made it over the line. Jim tried with 28 and the captain's 35 took us within touching distance but after that the batting ended, 15 runs from the tail inc. 4 ducks had us all out, 24 runs short of the target. Very disappointing and harsh on Chris as he played out of his skin for his 124. Given that we only had 9 players Friday afternoon we did really well to run a worthy foe so close so let's take the positives and move on, it's lucky that umpiring mistakes are easily forgotten and unlikely to ever be brought up in conversation again.
