South Woodham Ferrers II v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 21 May 2022 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 39 runs

Match report Broomfield lost the toss and were put into bat on a dog of a track, more sand than soil which seemed to suck the life out of every delivery. With few proven bats the captain decided to open with Chris in an effort to preserve his precious resource. The makeshift pairing got off to a solid start with nearly 50 on the board after 10 overs. Chris and poundshop Chris saw off the openers until Robin finally gave away his wicket, caught swinging at one that, like many, just wouldn't sit up. Nevertheless the plan had worked as Noah was straight into 1st change bowlers and soon got underway with his now trademark series of early 4s. Chris passed his 50 and was almost overtaken by Noah as the 15 year old raced to his own half century. Chris pushed on to 70 until he was finally caught out in the deep. Matty Mansfield came in, fresh from passing his driving test at the first time of asking, and proceeded to drive the SWF bowlers much like he'll be able to drive to away matches from now on. Noah fell just short of his century, bowled by one that stayed very low for 98. Andy and Edward came in and had a swing but neither could generate much from the lifeless pitch as they went. We batted to the end and finished 247/5.

The wicket now seemed to offer more for the bowlers than the batters so we were hopeful of a relatively quick finish, but after Noah clean bowled their opener in his second over the next breakthrough took a while to come and in the meantime SWF kept the scoreboard ticking over; it soon became clear that this wouldn't be an easy win. Time for some magic as U15 Issac 'the wizard' Wright came into the fray and had the oppo bats bamboozled with his leg spin that was gripping nicely. A couple of near misses caused a series of oohs and aaahs as he cast his spell, the witchcraft enabling Robin to pick up a couple of wickets at the other end and seemingly putting us back on the front foot. However their number 3 was still in and had passed his 50 and was joined by some big hitting bats from the middle order which again threatened our total. Andy Pyne threw down the wicket keeping gloves and used all his experience to keep the batters guessing as he orchestrated the field, his resulting two wickets put our noses in front once again. We'd kept them at arms length so as the match drew to a close Jamie Tweed was able to successfully negotiate the last couple of overs with a clean bowled victim himself then young Tristan, not wanting to miss out on the Pyne party, had their last bat caught on the boundary by his dad. All out for 208, another good win.
