Match report Final match of a rollercoaster season could have been vital to our Div 7 status, but in the end previous results for both sides made this a dead rubber. Our divisional status was secured before a ball was bowled, at the expense of our less fortunate opponents, Writtle, who were already down. Nevertheless the game was played in a good spirit with Writtle batting first. Thomas and Jamie contained them, but the opening pair eventually made their 100 partnership until Jamie made a breakthrough, the dangerous Buttress, off a rare catch from Wiffen. The top order continued to score well but their spirit was finally broken with a series of late wickets, Thomas the pick of the bowlers with 9-1-39-3. Writtle finished 238/7.

With the threat of relegation removed, our batters were able to play with freedom, a bit too free from John who swiped at one that took his off stump, then proceeded to sulk for the rest of the day, probably not helped by Jim and Richard taking his runs. Both made their maiden centuries for the club, Captain Jim finishing 102* and Rich 103. A fine effort that got the party started nicely as the 1s returned from securing promotion to Div 1. A good day all round and a performance that makes you think what could have been this season? We go again next year.
