Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v South Woodham Ferrers 2nd XI on Sat 03 Jun 2023 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report Hot day so naturally into the field we went, Liam and new boy Hashan opening. Solid 5 overs from Liam and lots of promise from Hashan, SWF 30 after 10. 1st change on, Edward and debutant Paul. Paul’s first competitive delivery for 10 years, wicket! Well held by Liam in the covers. Our tails were up but so were SWF, as they realised they had to hit out. The captain called time on the difficult middle spell to bring himself and Ruwan on. Suddenly wickets began to happen, Robin and Ruwan exchanging blows as bails went flying. The captain took 4 wickets and Ruwan 2, with few runs given away, SWF were 130 for 7. Surely the game was done? They evidently batted deep, however, finishing 220/7.

Liam and Jim opening and they made an effortless 60 partnership. Jim, who was going well, unluckily played on but Matty picked things up to keep us ahead of the run rate. He hit 41 which brought in Henry. Playing across the line to a straight one never helps but it meant Elliot was in. 1st teamer Elliot had hit runs last year, and as we inched our way forward the hope was he’d see us out, but another swipe across the line finished his innings. Ruwan in next, surely he would see us home? The usual big hits got us closer to the finish line but then he was given out. No need to panic, only 30 runs needed and wickets in hand, so the boys could finish things off. Edward in, but then out soon after. Ben next, hung around for a bit longer but then he got bowled. No worries, veteran Paul in next, he won’t run a suicidal no need second run, but he did! Captain Robin in now, not a natural bat but can certainly hold up an end…out! Down to last man Hashan, who’s mate Ruwan had given the confidence sapping description of ‘bloke can’t bat’; he blocked the first two. Whilst we were all panicking perhaps it was forgotten that opener Liam was still carrying his bat, and he was in no mood to let his highest score count for nothing. A couple of good singles, then a very welcome 4 from Hashan, allowed Liam to hit the winning runs, and a PB of 93* in the process. Yes we made a meal of it but a last gasp win against a good team is all we need to remember. That’s 2 victories on the bounce, onwards and upwards!
