Match report
Writtle 2s vs BCC 2s
Bowling first on a windy, slightly overcast day was just what we wanted. Sam Courtley opened and showed his pedigree from the first ball, bowling through to finish with impressive figures of 9-5-9-3, ably assisted by Lloyd at the other end who kept things tight. Ruwan continued the frugal spell by giving nothing away off his 9 overs which allowed young gun Edward to terrorise the opposition with a mixture of bouncers and Yorkers, the former often at helmetless players; as Sam put it, brutal from the kid. His ploy worked through as he finished with 3 wickets. Elliot and Robin then mopped up the rest getting 2 wickets apiece. However the Writtle opener, Stuart Pavitt, did what he does by nearly carrying his bat to the end with a hard earned 63, but with his team all out for 130 surely we had enough batting this week to get over the line?
We unfortunately had to put John down as he’d fallen awkwardly while taking a catch, injuring his injuries, which meant Richard was opening with Edward. The captain’s logic was that Ed had his tail up after his bowling spell and was facing a fellow U15 opening bowler who we knew from the circuit, so an ideal opportunity for him to finally get the ball off the square in adult cricket. But as with all best laid plans this season it didn’t work out, bowled round his legs for 5. Ed will be a good bat though as, like the best of our guns, he was full of excuses ranging from bowling being too slow, too leg side, indeed I think even the political situation in Ukraine was mentioned, either way not his fault. Nevermind. Jim in next, yes he’d been texting me at 2am that morning while pretending to be young in some club but he and Richard soon had the scoreboard ticking over nicely, we reached 15 overs with 70 on the board and even kicked on a bit further until Richard’s luck ran out as he was bowled by their veteran 1st change bowler for 44. The sexagenarian must have been better than he looked because within 1 over we’d also lost Jim and Ruwan. Again, no panic, Matty and big Sam in but after Sam went for a duck we could barely buy a run. All our bats seemed to walk out to the middle, scratch around for a few balls, then get themselves out. I don’t think either side could believe what was happening? It got to the point where we had to bring John back to life as he limped in at 10. But the Writtle umpire, who had been specially appointed to run the game by the league due to last season’s shenanigans, seemed to not want John to hang around as he was given out LBW despite middling it, at least that’s what John said. So it came down to Lloyd and the Captain, and with the latter’s record with the bat so far season there was only one outcome, all out for 118, defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. Difficult to pick ourselves up from this but we must; as Colour Sergeant Vaughan said to a young soldier in the film Zulu, who was lamenting why they were the unfortunates facing overwhelming odds: ‘because we’re ‘ere son, there’s no one else’. We go again next week, and we keep going until we get it right, however long that takes.
