Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Rayleigh Fairview 2nd X1 on Sat 24 Jun 2023 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 71
Match report
BCC vs Rayleigh Fairview
RF won the toss and surprisingly put us in to bat, perhaps hoping to take advantage of any nervousness after last week’s debacle. However, it must have dawned on the oppo skipper what a mistake he’d made, as John and Jim cruised to an opening partnership of 199, John finishing with 127 and Jim 71, the formers ‘bad shoulder’ evidently not holding him back too much. Ruwan then kept the pressure on with a ridiculously well hit 85 off about 7 overs, helped along by new boy Lloyd making him run 3s. 335/4 was our final score, leaving RF fighting amongst themselves as to why they didn’t bat first.
The daunting scoreboard meant that RF had it all to do but our opening bowlers tried their best to encourage them with a series of wides and no balls, keeping WK Josh on his toes, but an eventual straight one from Thomas skittled the off stump. Lloyd and Ruwan took over and steadied the ship, Lloyd keeping it in the corridor, not the room next door; one of many new phrases he brought to the party, although the chat about Thomas the Tank engine was perhaps a bit much. Nevertheless, 2 wickets from Ruwan and solid bowling from Lloyd removed any distant hope RF may have had of a win. Wickets were shared around after that, Alfie’s outswing caught an edge, the ball flying straight into the captain’s hands, seconds after John had told him to move 5 paces to his right. Alex Collins bowled beautifully, his perfect line and length hitting the top of off. Robin picked up an LBW to remove a particularly stubborn bat, then Hari and Jamie took a wicket a piece as the match drew to a close, RF did well to bat out the overs, reaching 264/8, making for a very long day. We celebrated hard, maybe a little too hard for some, as the captain realised he’d lost the ability to walk as he locked up the club house, but after a good win it had to be done. We’re out of relegation now so onwards and upwards.
