Match report Another lost toss but on a hot day we were mercifully put into bat. The Captain opened with our overseas star, Stuart, who was probably the best hope in our Bertie Bassett allsorts of a team. A steady couple of overs from the pair was rudely interrupted when Stuart was given out LBW. That brought in debutant Vamshi, no one knew what he was capable of, least of all him, but he picked up where he left off 5 years ago with a series of big hits. Unfortunately his luck ran out after an impressive 27, and his mate Hari went soon after. That brought in Ruwan, who was looking to improve on his 50 made against this team last year. He immediately got into his stride and began to hit out. Alex Collins joined the big hitting party, until the 1500m district champion was deemed to lose the race with their wicket keeper, as village level confusion saw Alex scramble to get back to his crease. After 10 overs we had 64 on the board but half our team out. Ruwan needed someone to stay with him and Josh obliged, defending well and attacking when necessary, making 31 in the process. Ruwan was now acutely aware he was running out of partners so turned his batting up to 11. Chances were given but they rained down from such a great height, with finger breaker written all over them, it was no surprise they were dropped. As last man Andy went in Ruwan was tantalisingly close to his maiden 100 but a foray down the crease too far meant he was bowled for 96. An amazing effort leaving us 195 all out after 30 overs, something to defend.

Jamie and Vamshi opened the bowling and kept things very tight, the impressive Vamshi picking up a wicket, well held behind by WK Josh. After 10 overs WM were 31/1, well behind the run rate. Debutant Hari picked up a wicket but then their big hitting #4 started to swing. We struggled to contain them for a while as they accelerated towards the finishing line. Robin and Ruwan tried to repeat their wicket fest from last week but the pair could only muster an LBW after a few near misses. The captain began to take advice from the experienced heads in the field as we tinkered with the placings but there was always a loose ball from whoever was bowling, ruthlessly put away to keep WM on track. With the inevitable looming everyone was given a bowl in the hope of a miracle but the game was lost after 41 overs. A tough one to take in the searing heat but an incredible effort from our team to make a game of it. WM stayed for a few beers after, confirming they’re a drinking club with a cricket problem, and said how impressed they were with our young players. We’ll get them next time.
