Match report Starting this fixture with -7 points meant that winning was the only option, a task made harder by losing the toss on a hot day; the Captain finding consistency with the coin already. Nevertheless a solid opening spell from Liam, topped off by a wicket from Thomas, kept them under 40 after 10 overs, aided by Ben’s dives behind the sticks. Young guns Ed and Jamie took over and, with the help of some good fielding, also kept the run rate down. What we needed now were wickets, and they were delivered by a fine spell from Ruwan claiming 3 victims, with the captain delivering thrilling dots at the other end. Ruwan and Robin bowled through their 9 overs straight then the openers and 1st change mopped things up, all picking up a wicket to leave Brookweald on 193/8.

With our opening partnership of Richard and Chris, 193 felt very gettable and the efficient manner in which they went about their business was eventually appreciated by our team on the sidelines, after a gentle reminder to applaud from the captain. Both openers picked off the bad balls playing sensible, low risk cricket, but the heat must have got to them as they neared their century partnership. A no need suicide run saw Richard walk off shaking his head, leaving Chris pulling the full teapot at the crease. Sure enough Chris then decided he had to win it by himself, and sent the next ball down the throat of their worst fielder at long on. Both openers out for 48 & 45 respectively but, despite the manner of their dismissals, their excellent stroke play had left us in a very strong position which enabled Liam and Henry to continue the good work. Two reverse sweeps from Henry followed by big 6s from Ruwan left Brookweald’s ageing fielders in awe and allowed Matty to finish things off to get us over the line with nearly 10 overs to spare. A good win with everyone contributing puts us in positive points territory and off the bottom. Only way is up now.
