Rayleigh II v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 05 Aug 2006 at
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Perhaps the highest scoring match in T Rippon history and even English village cricket (including the match in 2008 when Purleigh got 499 at Herongate cos the hosts only got 247, aggregate 746 compared to our 749! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/7478125.stm).
Also maybe the only instance of a guy scoring 220 and ending up on the losing side, as happened to Rayleigh skipper Barry Leadbeater. He was dropped 3 times at short mid wicket by first time stand-in captain Thorn to help him along the way. With other wrong decisions such as not taking over the gloves so Fuzz could bowl, not trying 11yr old Scott to bowl full and straight and not using himself (perhaps scared of the 40 yard leg side boundary!), the tea break was hardly a happy place for poor Thorn.
Broomfield capitalised on Rayleigh's understandable confidence with them starting with 4 slips and 2 gullys, and the opening stand of 80 came up in 11 overs, the required rate of 8.33 within spitting distance. Rayleigh thought they'd won the match at the fall of the 3rd wicket, the well-respected and dangerous Fisher going in the 17th over, leaving another 226 runs needed, with demoralised stand in skipper Thorn (without a league 50 so far in 2006, after seven in 2005) and unknown new man Keaney at the crease with only erratic Dobson and the bowlers to come.
However, due to the great starting run rate, the awesome road-like wicket, awful outfield with drainage craters and 40yard boundary on one side, a fairly risk-free stand of 152 in just 18 overs kept Broomfield up with the rate, but with still 70 runs needed in 10 overs it was far from certain. Fortunately one of the Rayleigh opening bowlers had left to go to re-arrange his sock drawer, leaving them a man short in the field in fading light and most importantly a bowler short with Rayleigh trying 7 different men to dismiss the now immovable Thorn and after Dobson's helpful knock it was left to Coco to hit the winning run with a full 2 overs to spare.
Cue much celebration and disbelief from both sides. Why didn't we get a BBC report??!!
