Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v South Woodham Ferrers II on Sat 23 Jul 2022 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 166 runs
Match report
BCC 2s vs SWF 2s
It was a game not to lose the toss and with the Broomfield cohort sending the captain out to the middle with the calls of ‘useless tosser’ ringing in his ears, even before the coin was airborne, the opposition called incorrectly meaning that finally, on a hot day, Broomfield were into bat first. John and the recalled Dave opened and they did themselves justice as they survived the first 10 overs with 50 on the board. Dave fell for a hard fought 16 which brought in the out of form Jim to partner the perpetually injured John. The latter somehow found the strength to push past 50 as the streaky Jim passed the same milestone; all that mattered were runs on the board as Broomfield surged past 100, the John/Jim partnership took us through 200 as they made hay off average bowling, delivered in very hot conditions. Jim’s return to form ended in 72 and John proved that age is no barrier with 124. Liam, Henry (including a notable reverse sweep 4) and Robin all contributed after to leave us on an unassailable 299/6.
A tough score to chase down wasn’t made easier by a first ball breakthrough for opener Thomas, then another, well caught behind by Ben. Edward joined the party with 2 wickets of his own to inconsiderately take him above his dad in the standings before Liam showed his 1st team pedigree with 3 scalps. The welcome return of Andy resulted in another wicket before Jamie almost completed an Inter-match hat trick by picking up a first ball wicket after a last ball victim in our previous match. Some contrasting fielding on the boundary between Jim and Henry ultimately contributed to SWF being all out for 133. A comfortable win that was converted by our bowlers after John and Jim’s early heroics; Broomfield back on track now with a few eminently winnable games coming up 🏏
