Our team was bolstered by the most promising player in the first team, and Noah, so despite it being a horrible day to lose the toss, with the sun bearing down on a very dry wicket, we went into the field with some confidence. Thomas Wiffen backed this up by being on the money from the first ball and soon dismissed their opening pair inc. clean bowling the dangerous Grant Smith for a duck. Robin joined the party at the other end, forcing a catch off another good bat, albeit with a muted appeal as we all waited for the no ball to be given, but their umpire didn't see it that way so back to the dressing room he trudged. Noah and Edward took over, both competing for 2nd team bowler of the season despite the former only being part time now, and indeed only playing for us due to a bad ankle; nevertheless Noah's 3 step run up was enough to force a wicket, well caught behind by Ben, then Edward got one of his own, aided by a good catch from Michael. Honors even and Noah maintains his 4 wicket lead in the standings which Ed will look to overturn during the second half of the season. A maiden wicket from birthday boy Josh had them at 130/6 after 23 overs which on a fast outfield wasn't a bad score, especially as we were starting to get into their tail. However, Baddow are pushing hard for promotion this season and their Captain was starting to look set, and despite Andy's miserly spell he began to take the game away from us. Pretty much everyone bowled but our luck had gone as difficult chances were put down allowing him to carry his bat for 165, helping his cohort to 302/6 after a hot and sweaty 45 overs.
Robin and Aziz opened the batting with nothing to lose and a bright start by the captain, with some nice 4s off the first over equaled by Aziz off the next, briefly raised our hope. But it was a flash in the pan as Robin was caught, and then the now visibly limping Noah followed suit as the wicket seemed to suddenly come to life. Aziz pushed on but Henry, Michael, and the U15s all found the sudden movement off the surface difficult to cope with and wickets duly tumbled. Once Aziz went for 22 it looked like we were going to be all out for less than 100 but Baddow didn't reckon on the resolute Ben and the big hitting Andy as our last pair put on a show. A series of 4s and 6s, one nearly over the clubhouse from Andy, gave us something to cheer at the end as we passed 100 but Andy was denied the chance to knock off the last couple of 100 runs when Ben finally fell for 17. We made it to 132 which put a thin veneer of respectability on our efforts but all out after 24 overs told the true story. Still, Little Baddow are a nice bunch and a few shared beers after made defeat a bit easier to take. Onwards and upwards to the next match.
