Match report Rayleigh Fairview 2s Vs BCC 2s

A glut of availability resulted in us welcoming some 1st team regulars to our ranks, so we went in full of confidence against Rayleigh Fairview. The captain had hoped that the new faces wouldn’t feel too much out of place, however the ‘pavilion’ being an industrial unit set in the middle of a field, without power or water, very much made them feel that they weren’t in Kansas anymore. RF put us into bat on a sticky wicket and openers Jim and Rich were soon walking back to the corrugated iron shack after just a couple of overs. To Rich’s credit, rather than dwelling on his early dismissal, he instead found that one of the factory units served beer so returned from the changing rooms with a pint in hand; great effort. In the meantime Elliot and Liam did the 1st team proud by playing straight, offering real competition against Extras in the race to 50, which Elliot won, soon followed by Liam. Both bats pushed on past 80 when Elliot eventually fell for 87, which allowed Matty to hit a quick fire 29* as he and Liam saw us to 256/3, 86* for Liam.

256 was always going to be difficult for the 9 men of RF but they gave it a good go and only lost one wicket, an LBW from Robin’s opening spell, to reach 87/1 after 20 overs. Ruwan made a breakthrough then Liam bowled well for his 2 wickets inc a good catch from Jim, the latter finally getting onto the scorecard in the process, but RF kept going and their surviving opener passed 50 to keep us on our toes. Edward was then brought on for his second spell and went on another Stuart Broad-eske hot streak, started by an incredible caught & bowled, as he clean bowled their middle order and tail to have them all out for 161, taking 4 wickets in the process. It was a game we should have won, given their league position and lack of numbers, and in the end we did comfortably. Our quality was a bit too much for them; a win for the Selection Committee perhaps, but a good win nonetheless and a genuine team effort. 3rd in the league now so we should be looking up for the rest of the season.
