Match report Writtle 2s vs BCC 2s

On a beautiful batting track the captain amazingly won the toss so in we went. With key players promoted to the 1s, Robin opened with Chris to try and extend his batting line up, and the plan worked again as the makeshift pairing made it to drinks after 15 overs with 67 on the board. After the oppo WK shouted that wickets always come after a drinks break Robin proved this point by being bowled first ball of the resumption, but the job was done as James Merrick came in to face the first change bowling. Unfortunately his bad luck continues as he was caught behind chasing one he shouldn't. Matty Mansfield strode out and looked like he meant business as he confidently hit any bad balls to the boundary. Chris O'Riordan was looking good but then suffered the misfortune of being out at the non-striker's end as Matty drove one back to the bowler, only for the latter to fingertip it onto the stumps as Chris was out of his crease, 67 for him that on another day would have been many more. After Matty went for 33 we pretty much ran out of batters but the tail stayed around, U15 Issac and Josh blocking out the last few overs, frustrating our rivals by denying the bonus points of an All Out. 195/9 our final score.

195 was defendable and despite our youthful line up we went at them hard from the off. Father and son pairing of the Bakers opened the bowling and kept Writtle behind the run rate. The captain kept himself on for his full 9 overs whilst rotating the colts in 3 over spells at the other end. The first breakthrough came from Robin as he clean bowled last season's leading run scorer for 13, a big wicket which gave us hope. Things were kept tight with cameos from Issac and Josh until Jamie Tweed made the next breakthroughs, clean bowling their No. 3&4 to keep us in the game. Edward then went on a Stuart Broad-eske hot streak as he joined the party with a succession of wickets, 4 in total over a few overs. Ruwan had now taken over from Robin and worked his magic until he finally made a breakthrough, helped by a salmon-like leap from Chris, albeit one about to spawn at any moment, as his thick set frame defied gravity to take a diving catch, which even included a completely unnecessary Hollywood roll at the end. The game was now well and truly on as we went into the final 10 overs. Josh was brought back at one end and bowled beautifully, keeping all three results a possibility. Edward, Jamie and the lesser-spotted Matty Mansfield bowled out the other end to keep the pressure on. It came down to the last couple of overs when Edward tricked the tail end bat into a thick edge up in the air but was cruelly dropped to deny his 5-for. We had given it everything but Writtle limped over the line in the penultimate over. It somehow doesn't feel like a defeat as it was such a narrow loss with all the colts performing way above their tender years. The opposition captain even said to me as we were walking off that our kids are amazing and will be a real force in coming seasons, I've got no doubt that he's right; we go again next week at home and the colts will be leading the attack again boosted by what they did today, how fortunate we are as a club to have them.
