Match report Lost the toss but one of those days when it wasn’t of great significance. Rayleigh into bat first and early wickets from the openers, Noah and Thomas, made the oppo skip question his decision. However their stubborn middle order didn’t follow suit as they drove and nurdled their way to a respectable run rate but were then countered by our 2nd change bowling; Andy taking a couple and a maiden wicket from the senior Tweed, confirming his potential. The returning openers mopped up most of the tail inc a good single-stump-to-aim-at run out from the captain to leave them on 177/9; decent but on a batting day we fancied our chances.

O’Riordans into bat and the first couple of overs had us above the required run rate. However, disaster! Chris clean bowled. Noah in but without a huge amount of batting to come a critical phase of the match ensued. We needn’t have worried though as the safe hands of John, who keeps declaring himself too old despite his 59* suggesting that it’s only his cantankerous nature, rather than any physical decline, that perpetuates such views. And of course with Noah at the other end, helping us over the line with 92* meant that, after only 26 overs, we made things look a bit easy. A good win that means anything’s possible this season…
