Match report
First league match of the season and what looked like a strong team a few days ago ended up being bolstered by 6 players under 18, testament to the strength of our youth system but a lot for the boys to take on as we made our way through the drizzle to open the batting. Veterans John and Stuart opened with the added pressure of knowing that there was unproven batting to come. They made a bright start nonetheless at a ground where 250 was the minimum target, Stuart unfortunately found a fielder just as he was getting into his stride but that brought in Noah who immediately made things look very easy with a series of 4s. At 10 overs we were on track with 42 on the board and things looked even better after 15 with 73, then 101 after 20. John had gone with a solid 28 to his name but unfortunately that's when our batting began to falter. The rest of us came and went, some hanging around for a few overs keeping Noah on strike and some just there to test out Little Baddow's catching. Noah didn't seem to notice his batting partners changing with alarming regularity, as he passed his 50 then his 100, eventually falling for an amazing 108, a fine innings for any player let alone one barely 15 years of age. The three U15s in the tail kept things going for a few more overs than the opposition would have liked but we finished all out for 184, with every one of us caught out; which I'm not sure is a good or bad thing...
184 was a defendable score at least and Noah and Edward showed no fear as they opened the bowling, Noah picking up a wicket after a well watched catch from Ben Baines behind the stumps, who had to dust the snow off the ball as it fell from such a height. Things were about even as we reached the 10 over mark when Robin and Jamie took over. Tight lines followed but no further breakthrough so the Captain called Andy off the bench he was using whilst fielding at 3rd man to try and make an impact. Not much was given away but due to the nature of the ground any feathered edge off a good ball, or pull from a bad one, raced down the hill for 4, usually with young Issac chasing as the ball seemed to follow him throughout the day. Robin and Andy eventually picked up a wicket each to keep things on an even keel, Andy's well caught again from Ben who was definitely fielding man of the match, although Andy's shoulder can expect a medal in the post for service above and beyond the call of duty. After 30 overs the game was still finely poised then Stuart, who was extra motivated to leave his mark as this could be his last match for some time as he heads off for pastures new, claimed two quick wickets. Self proclaimed best fielder ever in the history of cricket, John, had earlier put down a catch but he charged in from the outfield and dived to make amends for Stuart's second and at that point it looked like an upset could be on the cards. However with time to spare their no. 7 quickly settled and started to punish any bad balls and the slopey ground began to take it's toll. No more wickets went down and Lt Baddow crossed the line with nearly 5 overs to spare. It was a close one, closer than it looked perhaps, but it's good to know that we have young players we can rely on as we dust ourselves off and go again next week.
