Match report
Broomfield 2s vs Star Cricket
A friendly game of cricket on a lovely sunny day; simple things feel like a real treat at the moment given how the last year has been and this was no different. Our team batted first and had cause for optimism with some established bats in the top order and promising youngsters. However, the rustiness showed and in the end the scoresheet became a game of ‘spot the 1st team batsman’ as most of us succumbed for single figures, in sharp contrast to John Baines’ 91 not out. He probably would have made his 100 had it not been for a last wicket mix up with his son that can only be resolved at the dinner table, possibly resulting in a shout of ‘I hate you!’ then running upstairs to his room and slamming the door. I imagine young Ben will then have to go up and calm him down. An honourable mention should also go to Jim Merrick who stayed with John for the most overs whilst grinding out 20 runs, our very own Jack Leach to Ben Stokes. It was all done with 154 runs on the board. Never really enough to threaten a victory especially against a Nomad side who had evidently played before.
The plan was to win the toss and set a decent score as our motley crew looked stronger in that department. Nevertheless Captain Robin and Noah Pyne opened the bowling and made a solid start, each picking up a wicket, Noah’s one well taken by 14 yo Ben Baines making his senior team debut. After that we were able to spread the bowling around and loosen our collective arms ready for when the league fixtures start properly next weekend . No more wickets fell and the opposition started to retire their bats to also give everyone a chance, it was fair to say the fear factor was gone. They passed the winning mark with 10 overs to spare but an enjoyable day for all and a few beers after whilst pretending it was Summer finished off the day nicely. Things get more serious next week...🏏
