Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 135 runs
Match report
A warm, muggy afternoon with threat of thunderstorms after another week of selection nightmares with four changes in the preceding 36 hours culminated in the 100% table toppers Writtle skipper winning the toss and electing to bat.
The seamers bowled well, Copeman beating the edge on numerous occasions and the one nick he did get fell just short of slip. Asopa got movement in the humid conditions and also found the blade's edge but Owens as stand in keeper couldn't hold on. A few poor deliveries were put away on the lightning quick outfield and as the ball's shine disappeared and abysmal fielding errors kept relieving any pressure, the openers were coasting easily to 110-0 at drinks.
A bowling change to give spin a twirl worked immediately with Spennock getting the breakthrough and it was clear Writtle were going to go hammer and tongs for the remaining 22 overs with wickets in hand. Dobson held a good catch at cow, Eglin's bullet arm accounted for lazy running, possibly put off by the adjacent colt's shorter crease line.
The score was rattling up thanks to shambolic fielding and the opener's firm hitting but when Copeman returned and cleaned out the batsman's stumps it looked like the score may have been kept below 250, especially after Keyes dived like a salmon having a stroke and Coco took a return catch off the batsman's boot first ball with four overs remaining 225-6. Unfortunately their big number six tee-ed off and blazed the ball to all parts, a few gardens taking hits with Foster unlucky to have to bowl to the shortest leg side boundary and despite a last ball run out Writtle had managed 281.
A short shower at tea juiced up the track a little and the opener from the road end took advantage of the dark cloudy/hedgey background and the pitch's extra liveliness for some peppering short stuff and pacy cutters. After Keyes and Eglin fell early, Foster was given out LBW and Thorn soon followed to a good catch at slip, 12-4. Dobson and Farrow tried to play straight and get some pride but another mini-collapse soon hit and at 30-7 it's fair to say morale wasn't exactly at an all time high.
Youngster Farrow and veteran Spennock showed the "batsmen" how to play sensibly to put on 46 for the eighth wicket and after Anand got done by the pitch holding up for a leading edge, it was the Spennock and Copeman show, nearly doubling the score and getting dangerously close to a batting point before Spennock finally fell after reaching his maiden Broomfield fifty.
Overall another debilitatingly depressing defeat, letting ourselves down in the field and then seemingly no game plan or structure to the batting but some postives must be taken - 14 year old Fisher's excellent fielding scared the Writtle batsmen who wouldn't take twos down the slope to the roller on Fisher's good arm, Farrow finally got some league runs and Spennock and Copeman's last minute vigil hopefully rubbed off some of the patience and strong willed mental toughness for batsmen to protect their wicket on the upper order.
Halfway through the season, four wins, five defeats, mid table mediocrity ensues and a trip to high-flyers Aythorpe next week will be followed by five winnable winnable matches to ensure we are not dragged down into the relegation mire.
