Springfield IV v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 09 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 42 runs

Match report After losing three players last week to the 1st team but having them replaced by three of Pyney's workmates, spirits were high returning to Coronation park after last year's final match victory. Skipper Thorn lost the toss and was invited to bat on a fairly hard surface, even though the home side only had 10, awaiting a late arrival.

There was early seam movement and good bounce, with the openers able to leave on length, something unheard of on Broomfield's puddings. With the two opening bolwers's age total probably not totalling the broomfield skipper's, there were some four balls to put away and Thorn duly did so, with Riaz carefully watchful until he was tempted into a cross batted swipe off a short ball and oppo skipper took a good catch running back from 2nd slip at 54-1 off 11 overs.

Springfield's 11th man arrived (the small kid who took 7 wickets at Brooklands last year!) and came on first change, economically if not threatening, 10 off 6 not so troublesome overs. However, boundaries were being struck from the other end and skipper Thorn reached 50 with his 13th four, no other scoring shots.

With 100 on the board at drinks the skipper decided to miss a straight long hop to allow someone else a chance. Holmes then Newman and Owens all struck the ball cleanly and Foster at the other end was content to knock the singles and punish the bad balls for fours, safe in the knowledge there would be a mis-field or an extra just around the corner, and with some running urgency Broomfield amassed 260-4.

With a large total on a dodgy outfield and bouncy track, the last thing we wanted was for the bowlers to pitch short and fielders to fumble, both or which unfortunately occured too regularly, and even after debutant Francis's wicket, the oppo had a similar score at drinks.

The broomfield masterplan then kicked into action with old-stagers Foster and Copeman putting on the squeeze, seeing the required run rate rise from 6 to 7 to 8 and above, even with two awful stumping misses from the skipper and the first byes of the season, and it was left to Asopa and Owens to finish off the overs and a comfortable win by over 40 runs.

Overall a good day, first win of the year with some good batting and running to pressurise lazy/poor fielding, then some accurate bowling and dedicated fielding to defend the good total.
