Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Aythorpe Roding II on Sat 02 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report The league season started in lovely sunshine against Aythorope who had enjoyd two successive promotions but brought a mixed team of old, young and the seemingly unfit but appearances can be deceptive. Broomfield 2nd XI managed to field eleven adult cricketers for the first time in living memory, but games aren't played on paper.

After winning the toss, Thorn chose to bat to make the most of the pitch and ball hardness with a quick outfield and a strong looking batting line up able to set a mammoth total.

Tight bowling, rusty batting and aerial mishits saw the batting side slide to 79-9. Foster and Keyes the only ones to get into double figures, simply by playing straight and grafting, whilst batsman around them all seemed to want to get a couple of boundaries under their belt to play themselves in, when the opposite should be the target - play yourself in and then the big hits will come.

Spennock and Thorn snr applied themselves and protected their wicket with more determination than the nine batsman ahead of them to give a bit of dignity to the team in reaching 99.

Knowing that early wickets were crucial to any possible success, stand in keeper Foster was chosen to open the bowling instead and skipper Thorn took the gloves, dropping the opener in the fourth over. In my defence i was standing up and managed to scoop the ball up from one glove into the other and then back again before getting bored of juggling and just spilled it.

Fuzz got him LBW for no more runs next over though, and the assault was continued with Green breaking the threatening partnership with a good hold at gully by Foster, followed by a simple loop to Owens at mid off off Foster.

With the match looking to be slipping away by their middle order hitter, Spennock kept his nerve after conceding a maximum and the subsequent slice was held by Owens and an unlikely victory was on the cards as Spennock's tight bowling line and length brought two more wickets, Aythorpe eight down still ten runs needed.

Even with super sub Lloyd after Tris had strained a groin, the Aythorpe batsman found enough gaps to get the sufficient runs, with further bowling changes to bring on Anand and Greeny back again not quite getting the final wickets needed.

Overall a bad batting display but postives from Keyes and the last two in showing the others how to protect their wickets and accumulate runs without Hollywood style shots. A very good attacking bowling and fairly tight fielding display (OK one drop as keeper, but zero byes - when was the last time that happened??) all amounted to a tight, competitive and enjoyable match, unfortunately just not quite enough runs for victory.

Here's hoping for a better batting display at Springfield next week!
