Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Burnham Sports 2nd on Sat 03 Jul 2021 at 1:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report With the Summer weather putting the match at risk the fact that we’d previously beaten Burnham earlier in the season, and had a strong looking batting line up, counted for very little at 1pm. Fortunately the rain relented just in time and the game was on, with another coin toss win to boot; the dark days of 5 wrong calls in a row long forgotten. Burnham were put into bat with Micheal and Captain Robin starting proceedings. Things were kept tight with Michael picking up a wicket to leave Burnham on 33/1 after 10 overs. Their dangerman was still in and he looked to accelerate but was kept in check by our bowlers and eventually fell after making his 50 around the halfway mark. Burnham struggled to get going again and more wickets began to fall, with the leading bowler competition hotting up between Noah and Liam, both getting 3 wickets to leave them almost neck and neck midway through the season. Wickets as well, finally, for Stuart who’s 2 victims saw his season average plummet below the 100 mark. An unfortunate moment for their captain who top edged a delivery into his face meaning that he had to retire, after that Broomfield mopped up the tail leaving the opposition all out for 167 after 40 overs.

A quick turn around had Chris O’Riordan opening with Jim, John being forced to bat at 7 because he’d left the field due to old age, sorry injury. It was a very slow start from Broomfield, 3 maidens in the first 6 over cranked up the pressure and Jim succumbed first as he edged behind. Stuart, the returning Will, then Henry soon followed suit with single figure scores. Chris at last found a partner in Liam and the pair began to steady the ship, with Chris reaching 50 at drinks which was only acknowledged off the field as the new scorer, Robin, had run out of fingers and toes. Liam went which allowed John back in and with the O’Riordans united in the centre the result was never in doubt. They put their foot down and in a 10 over spell they took us over winning line with a few overs to spare, John even had the presence of mind to deny his nephew a century by holding the strike at the end, Chris making 95 NO to take him to the top of the run charts after just 2 games. A good win for Broomfield to get us back on track. We obviously wish their captain well and the latest news is that it’s nothing a few stitches won’t sort. A reminder that cricket can bite back at any time so we must all stay focused as we look to keep the unbeaten run going.
