Match report
5 in a row was at stake going into this match, both for losses and tosses, so the whole ground came to a standstill as the coin seemed to hang in the air forever, spinning on its axis; the successful call of 'tails' finally brought the drought to an end. On a wet day facing a damp pitch the decision was made to field first to let the opposition find out how the surface would play. Captain Robin, who's ankle was feeling a bit better, decided to unleash the 5 step run up as he opened the bowling but after the over had passed, and questions were posed about the need for a gully as clearly the ball would never carry that far, the 3 step run up was reverted to which kept the opposition at bay. Noah Pyne, bowling somewhat faster at the other end, also had a good start and by 10 overs Springfield were 33/2. A change of bowling resulted in a maiden second team wicket for Thomas Wiffen, and then another for Robin suggested a change of fortune for Broomfield. However, we struggled to break a few partnerships and the run rate crept up. Liam Atkins bravely attempted a caught and bowled but only ended up hurting his hand and with the pitch carving up due to the light drizzle the signs weren't looking good for a big total from us so it was more important than ever to bowl them out, but we came up just short, Springfield finishing 197/9; the usual numbers of byes and wides not helping our cause.
197 looked tricky but the welcome return of John O'Riordan gave reason for hope. Yes he hadn't faced a ball in over a year and nowadays uses one of those mobility scooters to get around but even so, with him and Stuart up top, the latter due a big score, there was an air of confidence. But, in a incident that drew parallels to when Henry cooper fought Mohammad Ali in '63 and Ali's trainer purposely cut his gloves to help him buy time to recover from a knock down, Springfield delayed the start to our innings as they claimed they couldn't find the match ball, indeed a call had to be made to courier one over from their clubhouse at Coronation park on the other side of town. This enforced delay perhaps allowed John to think about the amount of time it had been since he'd actually faced opposition bowling, and maybe Stuart was mentally going through all the ways he'd got out cheaply this season? Once play got back underway the much anticipated reuniting of our openers resulted in a squib as damp as the pitch they eventually walked out to, as within four overs they were both back in the shed with single figure scores. 197 now looked bigger than ever and with Liam dropping down the order to allow feeling to return to his hand it was up to Henry to do what he does and take the game to the bowlers. Unfortunately he got greedy and after hitting 4 x 4s off one over he was caught on the 6th ball. Matty tried to steady the ship and inched towards a useful 20 but with no one around him able to accelerate the run rate there was an increasing amount to do every time a new bat came to the crease. A final score of 111 perhaps confirms that the cricket gods were not on our side today. There's much improvement needed in our young team but with established players returning no one's panicking just yet; the half way point of the season is next week so plenty of time for our fortunes to change.
