Chelmsford Super Kings 1st v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 12 Jun 2021 at 1:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 91 runs

Match report Another boiling hot day and another toss lost so Captain Robin led his young team into the field with some trepidation given the opponent’s reputation for big hitting. With the resources at our disposal it was felt that going toe to toe with them would only end in tears so the field for the first 10 overs was set like we were defending a score in the last 10. To make things even more interesting we opened with our two slowest bowlers, the still-crippled captain and genuine tweaker, Stuart. Superkings weren’t quite sure what to make of this approach and a tentative start resulted. Unfortunately not everyone read the script and a couple of early chances were put down which somewhat undermined the master plan. Nevertheless after 10 overs CSK had been limited to 40 so the big guns were brought out in the form of Jamie and Dan, making their debuts from the U13s. Good line and length from Jamie produced his first senior wicket with Captain Robin taking the catch, although pushing off on his bad side led to a stagger described as ‘like running without ankles’, which probably wasn’t far from the truth. Noah Pyne was doing good work at the other end by taking another wicket. Andy took over and by defying doctor’s orders and any sort of self regard he eventually got CSK’s gun bat, however by then the score was going up with the temperature. Weary legs kept running in and even the young ones started to look tired. Noah’s second spell made more wickets happen, he eventually finished with 4, and a tidy spell from Stuart slowed things down for a while but CSK batted deep and they finished 232 after their 45 overs.

A challenging score to chase so a good start was needed, but unfortunately their gun bat turned out to be an even better bowler and he soon clean bowled both openers, then Jack Copeland who had made a welcome return behind the stumps in the first innings. The triple threat in the engine room showed some signs of life with Liam, Matty and Noah all passing 20 but it wasn’t enough to threaten the CSK total. Captain Robin tried to sweep the quality spin bowing away with some moderate success but eventually it was left to young Jamie and Dan to rescue the game, and to their credit they both carried their bats for the last few overs to ensure that at least they were smiling. It has to be said that CSK showed great sportsmanship at that stage of the game, as they had done all match; a genuine pleasure to play against. All niceties aside Broomfield finished on 141/8, not enough to win most games let alone this one. With players returning in the next few weeks there are reasons for optimism but in the meantime our young players will continue to gain match experience so that one day these defeats will be avenged, and maybe, just maybe, on one of those days the captain will win the toss...🤞
