Match report Broomfield vs Epping Foresters

Another defeat but this time more a tale of what could have been. Bad toss to lose on a perfect batting day especially when Broomfield bowling resource was scarce, only 2 strike bowlers fully fit. Nevertheless a solid start from Michael and Noah with both picking up a wicket in their opening spell; 2 catches of an eventual 3 from Matty Mansfield. Foresters reached 10 overs for 37/2. The captain then had to fill 35 overs with bowling options ranging from the very young, to the very injured, with only lack of match practice in between. The heat was beginning to bite as Broomfield toiled in the field and with Foresters increasing the run rate the game started to get away. However a miserly spell from the one legged captain and the ever improving Liam Atkins started to reverse the trend as more wickets began to fall, Liam picking up 4/20 after 7 overs. Broomfield were back in the game and the possibility of getting all the opposition wickets for well under 200 looked on but as the sun beat down Foresters put their foot on the accelerator again and took the score from 150 to 230 in the last 15 overs, their No. 4 finishing 94 NO despite being dropped 3 times, Broomfield unable to get the final wicket as Foresters completed their 45 overs.

On a hot day 230 was a big number to chase down as a weary Stuart and Jim opened the batting. A decent start from the pair but with Stuart finally getting on top of the 83 year old opening bowler his female replacement’s pace proved too much as he was caught after 18 runs. Jim was hanging around but no one could stay with him as Liam came and went followed by Matty, who then took out his frustration on a poor innocent table that was just stood there minding its own business. Noah made a bright start but got ahead of himself to go cheaply; it’s safe to say that the engine room has run out of gas for the moment. Barely a run from the rest of the team as we capitulated 77 all out. Young Dara Gleeson at least managing a Not Out so he’ll be able to work on his average in games to come. Disappointing all round, too many runs given away in the first innings, 31 wides and no balls adding an avoidable 50, at least, to the first innings score; and let’s not talk about the dropped catches. Superkings away next week who, like us, have lost their last few games after a good start. A chance to return to winning ways.
