Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 84 runs
Match report
Away to the league leaders with holidays and injuries taking their toll on the Broomfield line up, but a chance to blood some more youngsters. On a perfect day for batting the captain naturally lost the toss so into the field we went. With the regular opening bowlers either unavailable or injured it fell to Noah Pyne and Michael Sawyer to set the tone and they did so admirably, limiting HR to 57/1 after 15 overs. The bowling was shared around with Thomas Wiffin making an encouraging league debut returning tidy numbers from his 5 overs. Liam Atkins also bowled his fair share but the quality and depth of HR batting began to show with few chances presenting themselves, their innings finished 262/4.
A big total for Broomfield to chase down and as the injured captain couldn’t really bowl he decided to open the batting just to make himself useful and exceeded expectations with his 2. Stuart Watts made his customary fast start but went after 21 which meant Liam Atkins and Jim ‘Tendulkar’ Merrick occupied the crease. Fresh after his maiden 50 in the last match Jim picked up where he left off supported by Liam then Matty Mansfield. HR were bowling well with no real weak links but were plagued by a high number of wides. It was suggested that their trencherman fielding at slip was exerting his own gravitational pull, drawing the HR bowling that way; whatever the cause Broomfield were grateful for the runs as they slipped further behind the run rate. Jim pushed on to a new PB of 67 but once he was gone any hope of overturning 262 faded as the young tail offered little resistance, Broomfield all out for 178 after 40 overs. A brave effort in a match that was always going to be difficult to win, we need a return to form at home next week to get back on track and maintain what has otherwise been a decent start to the season.
