Match report Rankins 2 vs Broomfield 2

Away to Rankins looking to keep the winning run going. The rain was threatening but the gods relented enough for a 70 over game to go ahead. Broomfield batted first with Jim facing the first ball alongside the returning Scot Reilley. It was a difficult start and runs were few and far between, the opposition evidently a bit stronger than they had been in previous matches. Scot played a gorgeous cover drive but an attempt to repeat the shot resulted in his off stump flying. No Liam but the ‘engine room’ was still looking strong as Matty, Noah and Henry lined up to bat. Unfortunately we seemed to be running on empty this week and both Matty and Noah went quickly however Henry found something in the tank as he immediately took the game to Rankins whilst racing to his maiden 50 in senior cricket. Jim Merrick was ably supporting as he too reached the 50 mark for the first time. Things were now back on track but as the half-centurions departed the rest of the line up struggled to cope with Rankins 13 yo spinner who’s gentle pace but effective flight quickly saw off anyone who tried to take him on as he finished with a 5-for; not much to write up re. the rest of the batting, Broomfield all out for 149 after just 30 overs.

With only 35 overs to play 149 was defendable but a good start was needed. Robin and Raj did their best but with Robin leaking runs and no wickets falling change was needed which brought on Scot. He bowled like he had never been away and soon picked up a wicket via a smart catch from our evergreen wicket keeper. Raj followed up with a victim of his own but a few chances dropped in the field proved costly as Rankins chased down the Broomfield total which probably needed to be 20-30 higher for a win to be possible. The rain returned but not enough to threaten proceedings and despite another wicket for Scot and one for Andy Pyne Rankins crossed the line with 3 overs to spare. No win this time but Jim and Henry can be proud of their efforts as we put this one behind us and get back on track at home next week.

*footnote to this result, turns out that Rankins 1st team had cancelled their game citing lack of players but had let this match go ahead, which contravenes leagues rules (despite having a T Rippon Board member in their batting line up, so they really should have known better!). End result meant we were subsequently awarded a full 26 bonus point win and Rankins were docked 20 points.
