Match report Burnham 2s vs Broomfield 2s

Away to Burnham for the first league match of the season, always difficult to get a team together for a 45min drive, especially on a day with rain forecast, yet somehow 11 of us showed up ready to play. The Burnham gun-bat was at the crease; they said he hadn’t been out in over a year but Captain Robin’s 3rd ball showed this may have been a reference to lockdown rather than any cricketing prowess as he was caught behind by our new young wicketkeeper, Lee. A good start, and the run rate was kept down with Robin and Raj bowling tight lines, Burnham reaching 10 overs with barely 40 on the board. A change of bowling brought on Noah Pyne and he soon found his rhythm to claim the second wicket. The halfway point had Burnham at 90, below par for the ground, and this message was evidently passed on after drinks. Their number 5, who some said was twice the player he used to be, albeit in a lockdown way, upped the tempo and turned his considerable appetite on Robin. Robin, who had just clean bowled their captain, was hit left, right and centre over the next few overs and only a flying catch from ‘super’ Jim Merrick was able to salvage any pride for the Captain. After that Burnham continued to get runs and only towards the end of their innings did more wickets fall as Raj, in his second spell, and Andy, picked up 3 at the death. Burnham finished on 226/7.

227 to win and with not much proven batting in our lineup some may have been concerned. They shouldn’t have been as Stuart and Micheal made a bright start, keeping the run rate comfortably above the 5 an over required. Stuart got a little ahead of himself and fell fairly early but Liam, coming in at his new no. 3 position, was soon into his stride as he raced towards a half century. Micheal went beyond his brief of ‘just don’t get out first over’ by reaching 50 himself soon after. Things were looking good with Broomfield staying just ahead of the run rate but as Micheal went for 56 and Liam following suit on 74 the question was could we chase down the remaining runs with the overs left? We needn’t have worried as Matty, perhaps feeling pressure now that he has competition in the wicket keeping department, set about the opposition with intent, at one point dismissively hitting a 6 over the field that had been brought in to put pressure on him. At the other end Noah was effortlessly knocking off the runs as the opposition began to sense the inevitable. The young guns passed the winning line with 4 overs to spare. Former Captain John had said to the current one that the youngsters would surprise us all, and he was of course right. Great effort all round and one that shows real promise for the season.
