Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Old Chelmsfordians on Sun 26 Apr 2009 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 110 runs

Match report A beautifully sunny spring day saw a strong OCs team visit for the final pre-season match. Fortunately OCs lost the toss and were inserted to at least guarantee 40 overs.
After two late morning drop outs, Umpire and ex OCs skipper Mawer agreed to play for Brooms, and Thorn Senior hurriedly returned from a weekend on the south coast to complete an 11, but not quick enough as the OCs sub fielder dropped a dolly at second slip off the unlucky Asopa (to add to Lloyd's drop at slip last week).
The openers used the new ball well, often beating the outside edge but as we were on the end of the square where the slope is most pronounced and being used for a third time in eight days there was little bounce making life difficult for keeper Eglin and the score ticked over with byes.
A kamikaze run to mid off allowed Thorn to show everyone a text book run out, attacking the ball low, clean two handed pick up, one step to set himself and hurl the ball on the bounce between the running batsman's legs to get the breakthrough.
Green broke through the OCs skipper's attempted hoik to leg to bring together a couple of decent batsmen who hit the ball straight and on the up as the ball stopped moving and the pitch held true enough.
The first cross batted slog saw the ball spiral up to Win at cover point, no Rimmer this time, and as the other swiftly reached 50 he walked off much to Brooms surprise but also delight.
The fearlessness of youth and confidence already instilled from the earlier batsman twinned with some poor fielding (including another drop off Asopa) kept the OCs score rising but a late surge from Baker (jug avoidance on the hat-trick ball) kept the score down to 223 off the 40 overs.

Whether it was the home knowledge that chasing over 200 after tea on a used track would be a stiff task, or the prospect of facing 5 opponents who had bowled in the Premier division, the dressing room wasn't exactly brimming with confidence.
At 12-3 with the 2nd team's top order all missing straight balls that pessimism was warranted! OCs then brought on their usual sunday string and Brooms started connecting bat on ball and the lower order got some runs but too many mis-controlled aerial hits to fielders who had the temerity to catch them. Ex OCs skipper Mawer top scored against his old comrades (actually second-highest after Wides).

Overall a good practice before the league season, showing how fielding ineptitudes release pressure built by disciplined bowling can adversely affect the bowler's confidence and rhythm. More application needed to the basics of protecting your stumps and then being in control when hitting the ball on a slow surface for the batsmen to consider, along with worrying less about the opposition and concentrating on your own game and how you can best perform and enjoy the match.

Roll on the League season!
