Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Great Baddow 2nd XI on Sun 19 Apr 2009 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets
Match report
With the typical British early spring weather conspiring to force the cancellation of the 1st XI friendly, the 2nd team were boosted with a couple of first teamers for the visit of Gt Baddow's Sunday side.
Even with warm sun all morning, the pitch was still a bit damp underneath and a soft, well-grassed outfield conviced Pyle to bowl first when winning the toss.
With these conditions and general winter rustiness, the normally swashbuckling Chambers and Thorn were unable to get any timing or placement and the score trickled along to 29 off the first ten overs.
With frustration growing Chambers yorked himself when advancing allowing Newman the chance to free his arms and try to get the board moving. After a few plays and misses, inside edges and a swirling drop, Newman and Thorn fell in quick succession, both attempting ugly hoiks to leave the side in a bit of strife at 66-3 at the 20 over halfway stage.
Keyes and Foster also struggled to get any rhythm but dug in and by rotating the strike put on thirty before Foster gave midwicket catching practice. Green made decent contact with his first ball, but mid on gobbled it up, becoming the first player this season to get Minus fantasy points. Thorn senior and Pyne were left to get something defendable with the score 97-6 with only ten overs remaining.
Some good running and lusty blows was ended by another uppish drive easily caught, and after watching Farrow dolly the ball to square leg first ball, Asopa did exactly the same three balls later.
Last batsman Owens showed no fear or hesitation and swiped cleanly to support Pyne's late innings assault to get the score up to 165 and his own half century.
After an economical start to keep the score to 20 off 8 overs, it all went a bit downhill as the Baddow batsman had no trouble with the pitch, easily timing the ball into gaps. An early drop at slip allowed a contagious spread of poor fielding and Baddow were never under any pressure but all the bowlers had a good work out to hopefully stand them in good stead for the coming season.
