Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Gt Baddow on Sat 19 Sep 2020 at 12:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 106 runs

Match report Last game of this Covid-hit season and Captain Robin led a super-immune team featuring 8 players 16 or younger into the field. Robin and Jack opened and kept things reasonably tight with Robin picking up a wicket just before the 10 over mark. Baddow were hovering around 50 so the match was evenly poised when the Pynes came on, Pyne the younger and Mutalithapyne, who decided today was an Offspin day. The father and son battle to rival the Skywalkers was on and Muttiah drew first blood. Noah brought things level with a clean bowled victim of his own but then Andy cheated by bowling a straight ball on top of off stump to go ahead 2-1. Third change bowlers then came on which Baddow took advantage of to accelerate the run rate and take the game away from Broomfield. The openers, then Pynes, were brought back on at the end to tighten things up, during which Noah claimed his second wicket, via a Sub catch, to make honours even for this encounter; to be continued next season...Baddow finished 277.

With designated opener Lee Wainwright having gone off with a bad back Jack Reilley was pushed up the order to open alongside Liam. Jack was there for a good time, not a long time, and took it upon himself to be judge, jury and executioner for every bad ball as he exiled them to the boundary. He fell for a quick-fire 22 which brought in find-of-the-season Henry (present company accepted, Noah). He again showed positive intent and no little talent as bad balls were punished; with Liam also getting into his stride it looked like an unlikely win could be on the cards but once Liam went for 23 then Henry, agonisingly close to his maiden 50 with 47, the runs dried up. Abhi came in at 4 and showed discipline and patience for 30 runs and Matty tried his best with 23 but it was too little too late as the game drifted into the doldrums. A late flurry from the specialist spinner couldn’t quite get us to within a 100 runs of Baddow’s total as Broomfield finished 171/9.

A chastening defeat to a Division 5 team may have hurt this time but the young players will have learnt things that will hopefully reap rewards next season and beyond. The future is definitely bright.
