Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 10 runs
Match report
Covid Friendly vs Terling
The disrupted cricket season restarted as a mixed 1st and 2nd team played at home to Terling. Rich Lynn and Liam Atkins blew the cobwebs away and headed out to the middle as they faced hostile bowling, and terrible banter, for the first time in over a year. The slow outfield proved a difficult obstacle for both bats as they struggled to get the ball off the square with the opposition commentating on every ball as if presenting on sky sports; if you’re going to do banter at least make it funny, they seemed to have the dial set to ‘dull’. Liam and Rich stuck around but for few runs which only changed once Luke Farrow came in. Luke’s batting last season was described as ‘ton or bun’ so once he negotiated the first few deliveries a good score was on the cards, and so it proved as he anchored the innings allowing other players to show what they could do: Captain Rob Lynn broke in his new bat with a useful 28 then Scott Fisher upped the ante with 43. Meanwhile Luke deservedly passed his half century before eventually falling for 53. After that runs became as rare as someone working from home volunteering to go back to the office. The two John’s came and went, Baines out caught via the bat handle before O’Riordan succumbed to a rare LBW, as we all know he has never legitimately been out that way. With the run rate dropping like a statue in Bristol harbour it was time for an unlikely hero in Robin Baker. Not usually renowned for his batting, a series of lusty blows defied expectations and with admirable support from Jack Reilley, Robin hit a much needed 23 to bring the final score to a defendable 183.
Terling into bat and Scott Fisher and Jack Reilley opened the bowling. Wickets fell regularly, first with Scott then Nick Cowell, once again, showing us all how it’s done with 3 wickets in quick succession. The pressure was very much on Terling as their no. 7 came to the crease. However any thoughts of an early bath were erroneous, not just because the covid restrictions disallowed any such dangerous use of club facilities, but also because he was one hell of a bat. Good bowlers were suddenly made to look bad as he hit 4s and 6s seemingly at will. The run rate went up as did their chances of winning. Luckily captain Rob had a plan and he set the trap to personally take the catch on the boundary off the bowling of Luke Farrow and the dangerman was finally dismissed for 68. Their veteran Tourette’s-suffering opener was still there and whilst he may not have been allowed to see his grandchildren for the last few months he saw 50 come and go as he doggedly chased down the remaining runs. Their total edged up and any outcome was still possible as the game entered the last few overs. Scott Fisher was brought back on and seemed to contain the ambitions of the opposition but it all came down to the final over with Jack Reilley in the hot seat. He not only navigated his way though the death over but also stopped the opener carrying his bat by clean bowling him and securing a hard fought win, Terling’s 173 coming up just short. A good win for Broomfield hinting at what might have been this season. At least cricket is back
