Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 66 runs
Match report
After a comprehensive defeat involving a good old fashioned batting collapse earlier in the season the omens for the rematch weren’t good as Broomfield travelled with a very young team. The Writtle dangerman who made 89 against us first time round was identified as the threat and thus the experienced Raj opened the bowling to try and contain him, with the young guns at the other end mixing things up. The plan seemed to be working as they reached the 10 over mark with the score under 50. However the perfect batting conditions soon tested Broomfield’s young squad as the run rate began to accelerate. Broomfield couldn’t buy a wicket as the boundary fest took the score past 100 then 200, a few wickets were eventually pulled back but Writtle finished 291/4 with the opener carrying his bat with a fine 160.
Broomfield into bat with a daunting score to chase down. Stuart Watts made his season debut by opening the batting alongside the tenacious Micheal Sawyer. It was a positive start as Stuart was keen to show off his very expensive hand- made bat and it looked good value as the boundaries flowed, only for a mistimed drive to send him searching for the receipt; 39 runs after such early promise. Micheal had gone but the big hitting Raj came in supported by Matty then Noah. Raj was content to deal in boundaries with his young partners doing 360s on more than one occasion as they realised the single wasn’t on; his style reminiscent of Andy Pyne who was nodding with approval from the sidelines. Raj stuck around and was out just shy of his half century with 49. Captain Robin then reunited with Noah after their batting heroics last week but there was a lot to do and despite a gutsy effort from the duo, and then Robert Cook with a well hit 26, Broomfield reached the end of their innings for 225/8. A fine effort and the seasons highest score to date which the team should be proud of.
