Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Writtle 2nd on Sat 22 Aug 2020 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 132 runs

Match report First 2nd team game of the season vs Writtle. Captain Robin lost the toss so asked young Jack Reilley, and even younger Noah Pyne, to open the bowling on a very windy day. The mixture of Jack’s pace and Noah’s control caused the opposition problems however Writtle’s belligerent opener seemed to be making up for lost time in this Covid-hit season. Helped by the middle order the run rate accelerated to start to take the game away from Broomfield. Robin had several bowlers to choose from so brought on the veteran Pyne and Robert Cook to mix things up, then turned to Reilley senior and Micheal Sawyer. A couple more wickets went down but the opener was still there pushing up the run rate. Few chances were presented to get him out, a diving effort from James Merrick being the closest we came to turning off the run tap. For the final 10 overs the opening bowlers were brought back on and the wickets finally began to fall. It was suggested that it wouldn’t be fair to ask young Noah to rein in the well-set Writtle opener but he justified the Captain’s faith by causing a run out then removed the danger man himself who finally went for a well hit 89. Perhaps the damage was done by then but another wicket for Jack and a last ball of the innings LBW for Robert Cook nearly got them all out, Writtle finishing 200/9.

Broomfield into bat just as the wind died down and the scoreboard pressure resulted in early casualties as John O’Riordan was run out first over followed soon after by Liam Atkins. Matty Mansfield and Scot Reilley tried to steady the ship but didn’t hang around for long which meant that virgin captain Robin and his team were at risk of being given a sound thrashing. James Merrick and Robin added a few runs to the total but fell to straight balls and no one else threatened the score until Andy Pyne came in with his bat set to beast mode. A 6 and two 4s off his first over may not have made a dent in the deficit but it was enough to wind up the opposition bowler into going for an aggressive run out with Andy still standing in his crease. A wry smile followed when the next 6 bounced into the same bowler’s car, unhappily for him he couldn’t blame anyone as he’d bowled it. A small victory in a what was a poor batting performance, Broomfield all out for 68. At least it didn’t rain.
