Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Beauliieu Park 2nd on Sat 27 Jul 2019 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Beaulieu took a well deserved win off us in the last fixture so, given the weather forecast, it was no surprise to see Captain John in full Navajos war dress performing an anti-rain dance when we drifted into the ground. Somehow, against all the odds, the match went ahead and after a minimal delay Elliot Cowell and Robin Baker opened the bowling. Robin struck in his first over via a great catch from Elliot. The latter then upped the ante with 3 wickets, inc 2 in 2, to put the pressure right back on Beaulieu. Robin added another wicket in his penultimate over meaning that the openers had wiped out the opposition top 5 in their opening spells. Andy Pyne and Michael Sawyer then kept the foot on the throat by taking a wicket each and good run outs from Will May and the injury returnee Stuart Watts contributed to Beaulieu being vanquished for 97; Liam Atkins’ 2 great catches in the field played no small part.
Broomfield then had every interest to pretend it wasn’t raining as Elliot Cowell and Liam Atkins opened the batting. After a solid start Liam eventually fell which brought in Stuart Watts. He rolled back the years with a number of well hit 4s but was clean bowled by their young Leggy. Will May then took to the crease to help Elliot take Broomfield past the winning line, with Elliot just missing out on his half century. Fair play to the opposition who kept going despite the drizzle, and even looked good doing it apart from their Beardy opener who looked like he’d been waterboarded, and moaned as much.
Despite doing literally nothing in the match, the value of Captain John’s early rain dance paid dividends as Broomfield recorded a win with all our rivals not managing to play; valuable points meaning our promotion prospects are very much alive.
