Great Totham 3rd v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 08 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Gt Totham 3 vs Broomfield 2s
With two defeats in the last two games Broomfield went away to Gt Totham looking to get the season back on track. On a windy day and undulating outfield Broomfield bowled first with Jack and Robin opening. Robin’s bowling seems to have cornered the market in polite applause so far this season by providing the crowds with what we all know they want to see, economy rate. And his first spell didn’t disappoint with a miserly 3 runs being given away off 6 overs, with 3 Maidens turning the excitement levels up to 11. Micheal Sawyer then came on first change and broke the deadlock with a LBW. The next few bats were predominantly Colts which could mean only one thing: Pyne time. Like a strict headmaster asking for the weekend’s homework Andy had the cherub-faced middle order quaking in their white cotton socks, and 4 wickets quickly sent them sobbing to their mothers. Robert Cook was doing equally good work the other end with two well taken wickets himself, against adult bats. With the Totham wickets tumbling Captain John brought Robin back on to finish things off and the last wickets duly went down, including a good old fashioned caught at slip. Totham all out for 74.
Broomfield into bat and the ever reliable Chris O’Riordan led the way partnered by our own younger players. Steady progress was made with nice cameos from Liam Atkins and the wicket keeping wonder, Matty Mansfield. Incidentally there was a large tree a few meters within the boundary and local rules dictated that a ball touching it would automatically be worth 4 runs. Chris seemed to take exception to this and attempted to show his disapproval of the draconian rule by clearing the tree for 6. However with the stickler for rules that is Robin umpiring, the law had to be enforced and no matter how high Chris sent the ball Robin always saw a leaf struck and thus only a succession of 4s were awarded, much to Chris’ frustration and everyone else's amusement. The fun and games soon ended with George Watkins hitting the winning runs meaning that Broomfield passed the total in under 10 overs for the loss of only 2 wickets. A good match to restore confidence for all concerned, apart from maybe Josh...Back at home next week.
