Beaulieu Park 2nd v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 25 May 2019 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report There is a standard H&S video called ‘Slips, trips and falls’. It’s usually set on a building site but if someone happened to have recorded Broomfield’s fielding display against Beaulieu Park then it may well be better for getting the message across.

Broomfield were put into bat first and the O’Riordans got off to a solid start, comfortably passing 50 after 10 overs. John went a bit early by his standards and then was immediately joined back in the changing room by George Watkins who went first ball, and a wobble looked to be on. Scott Reilley then came to the crease and for a while at least it was business as usual. Chris played round a straight delivery which meant father was joined by son as Jack came into bat. The Reilley’s then steadied the ship and kept the scoreboard ticking over as they drove Broomfield past the 100 mark. Jack fell for an impressive 22 which brought in Josh ‘Maverick’ Reynolds. Maverick because he seems to have zero respect for the orthodox, swinging the bat left and right, with no little skill, to push the score towards 200. Scott eventually went for 49 and then everyone else could only fleetingly partner Josh, who stayed in to the end helping Broomfield reach 210/8.

In T20 matches the teams often walk out to up beat music. For Broomfield the Benny Hill theme tune may have been the most apt, certainly after the drinks break. Up until then the bowling was tight with early wickets for the father and son opening pair. They were ably supported by first change bowlers with more wickets going down. However their captain came in just before drinks and, whilst not suggesting for a second that anything untoward was in his drink, it seemed to change the outlook of the Beaulieu batting pair. At the 20 over stage they had barely got going and a routine victory looked to be on the cards but then the Benny Hill music began to play. There were misfields, overthrows, dropped catches allowing the opposition batters to cash in on our misfortune. The required run rate went down like the captain’s tolerance levels which, after finally getting a breakthrough, resulted in him calling the team into a huddle and telling us to gosh darn bowl properly and to try a tad harder in the field, or words to that effect. It was all for nothing though as the circus continued and Beaulieu edged closer to what at one point had seemed like an unlikely win. Their big hitting captain was eventually bowled but it was too little too late as the target was reached with a couple of overs to spare.

A lesson in humility for Broomfield, and once the nightmares from the Captain’s team talk have passed, we must surely use this as a lesson against complacency.
