Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Great Baddow 3rd on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 157 runs
Match report
Broomfield 2s Vs Great Baddow 3s
Broomfield batted first with Captain John and Chris O’Riordan opening the batting. On the hottest day of the year John’s breathing sounded like Darth Vader snagging the Death Star, but the gaping hole in the Death Star’s defences didn’t carry over to John who hit his first century of the season in a fine innings, with Chris unlucky to join him in Club Maximum, falling for 97. George Watkins impressed with some well hit 4s but fell to a ball that stayed low. Will May then made his long awaited debut, hitting a creative 33 runs against suspect bowling. Broomfield finished 291, a difficult target given the relentless heat.
The Broomfield bowling opened with Jack Reilley and a hungover Robin Baker. Robin was hungover due to an unavoidable work do the previous night but the drinking problem starts here as his first two overs were wicket maidens, setting the tone for the match and incepting the thought in his head that drinking before a game is a good thing. The Baddow man-giant Goliath then came in at 4 and briefly threatened a recovery, however Jack bowled an inswinging Yorker that defeated the end of level boss. The wickets were shared around after with Graham Mansfield taking 2 and Andy Pyne matching that with some rare adult wickets. Michael Sawyer’s pace finally claimed a victim and in the process perhaps realised that a shorter run up may be more beneficial going forward; watch out the opposition! Baddow were eventually bowled out for 134, a comprehensive win for Broomfield and a genuine team effort in testing conditions. The race for top of the league has now got interesting...
