Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 83 runs
Match report
OC’s 3 vs Broomfield 2s
In what could well be our last league match of the season, with the remaining fixture’s opposition having given up the ghost, Broomfield opened the batting with Chris O’Riordan and Liam Atkins. Both made solid starts getting to the 10 over mark for 40-odd but the best was yet to come as the opening pair pushed on to make their respective 50s, a maiden 50 for young Liam, which was well earned as his batting has improved as the season progressed. Liam was eventually stumped which brought in the big hitting Stuart Watts, who made 62off of what felt like ten 6s and two singles as he seemingly only dealt in boundaries. His eventual conquistador was of the fairer sex which obviously doesn’t take away anything from his first half century this season. Captain John O’Riordan then came in at four looking to up the run rate and set about the opposition bowling. Gentleman John is evidently of the old school and couldn’t possibly offend a lady as he metaphorically laid his coat over the puddle while gifting the girl a last ball of the innings catch, only charging her 27 runs for the privilege. In the meantime Matty Mansfield, a millennial, which are oft derided for their lack of chivalry, proved that manners cost nothing as she bowled him out for a golden duck. James Merrick remained not out at the end as Broomfield finished 238/5.
Broomfield opened the bowling with Robin Baker and Jack Reilley who between them limited OCs to 36 off the first 10 overs. Andy Pyne then came on first change. Andy has unfairly been accused of only bowling out Colts and Girls, however up until now there have been no girls to aim at, but the OC line up soon corrected that aberration. In fairness Andy clean bowled their opener, responding to the Captain’s request for a wicket ball, then the prophecy was fulfilled as her wicket tumbled. Andy was outwardly magnanimous and conciliatory but we all knew that on the inside he was laughing like a James Bond villain who had just seized a shipment of nuclear warheads. Robert Cook struck with two wickets himself which opened the door for Michael Sawyer’s pace. There was a mini competition going on between three of Broomfield’s strike bowlers, Jack, Robin and Michael, to see who could take the coveted title of ‘best of the rest’ after Andy’s 30-odd wickets this season. Michael duly stepped up to the plate with 3 wickets to leave him head and shoulders in 2nd place, including a catch from John which goes some way to make up for the rumoured three dropped last week; rumoured because there was no match report...
OC’s finished 155/7 meaning Broomfield won by a healthy 83 run margin. If this is our last league game then we have done ourselves proud and should have secured enough points for a promotion spot. Everyone contributed this season, as was pointed out by Captain John in a fine speech at the end of the match. Well done Broomfield.
