Match report
Burnham Sport 2s vs Broomfield 2s
Top of the table clash with Broomfield looking to avenge our defeat in this fixture earlier in the season. Broomfield bowled first with Robin Baker and Jack Reilley opening but neither bowler could quite get into their rhythm and were asked to take a blow by Captain John to polite applause. Micheal Sawyer and Andy Pyne in next and things started to turn Broomfield’s way as the fast bowling pair removed Burnham’s openers and set about the middle order with further wickets going down. It was then decided to take the pace off the ball by bringing on Gary Copeman and young Abhinav’s spin bowling, which further put pressure on. However Burnham are top of the league for a reason and even though another couple of wickets went down they kept finding ways to keep the scoreboard ticking over. With the last ball of the innings Andy Pyne ran out their dangerman by winning the slowest race in history, less tortoise and hare, more tortoise and tortoise with a go fast stripe on its shell, meaning Burnham finished 182/8 which we all felt was 20-30 runs higher than it should have been.
Broomfield into bat with Captain John and Liam Atkins opening. We were always struggling to keep up with the run rate and once John had been caught for 24 there was a lot of weight on Will May’s shoulders to chase down the target. He took on the task admirably and the cricket gods seemed to be willing him on as chances were put down in the field but unfortunately no one else could stay with him for any significant length of time. Despite an exciting last few overs Broomfield were always kept at arms length and were all out in the penultimate over 20 runs shy of the target, with Will carrying his bat for 66.
A missed opportunity for Broomfield but with last week’s bonus win in the rain and our nearest rival also losing today, our promotion prospects are still very much in our own hands.
