Little Baddow 2nd v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 20 Jul 2019 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
This was always going to be a difficult game, the Lt Baddow team was full of fit young men returning from uni, very different to the team we bowled out for 100 at home earlier in the season. In sharp contrast Broomfield were without the O’Riordans and also Will May, who pulled out late last night. Nevertheless a Broomfield 11 turned up ready for the fight, albeit with only 9 pairs of trousers as Matty and Liam forgot their kits, which definitely didn’t make us look Village as we were put into bat. Michael Sawyer and Liam Atkins opened and did really well to see out the first 11 overs with 40+ on the board. Unfortunately once that partnership was broken the rest went to script as the middle order struggled, Broomfield going from 44/1 to 48/5 very quickly. Matty added 17 but when captain Andy Pyne came to the crease there was a lot to do. Even so he hit a solid 32, helped by Robin Baker, who then became the senior batsman as Andy holed out. The game should have been up but a last wicket stand between Robin and Noah Pyne saw Broomfield finish 142 all out.
With something to defend Jack Reilley and Robin opened the bowling but Baddow were in no mood to hang around. Both bowlers struggled to contain the belligerent opening pair and it soon became nice and easy for Captain Andy as there weren’t enough runs left to make a real game of it. Michael bowled well and took a deserved wicket then Noah Pyne got the first of what will no doubt be many victims as he clean bowled the opposition captain and opener who had made his 50. Gary Copeman then provoked the the big hitting No. 3 into an air shot but it was just a matter of time before Baddow reached the target and a 7 wicket victory told no lies.
A defeat for Broomfield but some positives as more colts were blooded, quite literally in Henry Brennan’s case as he took a dive onto a gravel path whilst stopping a boundary, emerging with more than just the 2 runs saved. Still all to play for this season.
