Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Little Baddow 2nd on Sat 18 May 2019 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
After a delayed start Broomfield were put into the field with the best of Broomfield’s youth opening the bowling. Robin Baker, who was running late himself, walked onto the pitch just in time to take a catch above his head to get Jack and the team off the mark. In truth, this match was a bit after the Lord Mayor’s show, compared to last week, however the opposition, not blessed with much youth themselves, did their best to hold off the openers but the top order wickets fell in quick succession: another one for Jack Reilley and then Robert Cook joined the party, with Chris O’Riordan taking two catches.
Once the openers had finished their spells Captain John brought on Mad Dog and Robin, possibly not a great name for a comedy double act but remarkably effective as a bowling pair. Robin playing the straight man in contrast to Michael’s one liners; the joke was on Baddow as Michael’s 4 for 9 had them laughing in the aisles.
Various bowling cameos came and went but the damage was already done by the openers and Micheal, with Baddow finishing 100 all out.
Broomfield now had to chase down the total and the O’Riordans were in no mood to hang around. Two 4s off the first two balls by John realised the opposition’s worst fears, and only the Captain’s aversion to 6s stopped the towel being thrown in. A bit of movement off the seam saw John caught behind but Chris kept going, soon reaching his 50 and bringing the game to an end with Broomfield passing the target for a loss of only 3 wickets.
An effective if not particularly exciting win. The highlight, apart from Michael’s 4 for and Chris’ 50, being the endless stream of abuse by the captain to Robin; prime example being ‘no, we’ve already rolled that one’ when the latter took a tumble near the wicket.
Job done and 100% record maintained, Broomfield clear at the top of the table...on to the next match!
