Match report
Broomfield 2s Vs Bentley 3s
This was another 2nd Vs 3rd fixture so all to play for, Andy Pyne took the captaincy as John ‘wasn’t in the right frame of mind’ (an 18 year old cat had died). Broomfield batted first with the O’Riordans opening, but with feline distractions occurring John went 3rd ball to gasps of disbelief. Liam followed soon after to a low ball, seemingly leaving only Chris as the recognised Bat. When he went not long after for 18 the game should have been up for Broomfield but no...time for Matty Mansfield. Matt has been brilliant behind the sticks thus far but has only shown his batting potential in flashes. However, cometh the hour cometh the man, and Matt rose to the challenge. He carried Broomfield on his shoulders, ably assisted by the rest of the middle order and the tail, with Lee Wainwright contributing 25, Rhys Williams hitting 2 sixes in a row and Andy Pyne and Robin Baker putting on a show at the end with Broomfield finishing 218/8; Matty contributing 74 to a real team effort in what finished a competitive score.
With a score to defend Jack Reilley and Robin Baker opened the bowling and after a better-than-John rousing speech from Andy, Robin ran in and did what he does with a first ball wicket. Bentley stayed resolute after, without being prolific, and got to 10 overs for a modest score. After Robin corrected the boundary-dwelling Bentley batsman for knocking in his bat during early July, a quick bit of thinking from Chris O’Riordan produced a run out which put the pressure back on Bentley, and with Andy’s eyes lighting up at the prospect of colt wickets it looked like things had turned full circle. Vice Captain John bowled his full allocation of overs and despite some near misses finally broke through to get the Bentley danger man who had made his 50. Andy and Robin then finished things off, sharing the wickets
A genuine team performance, Broomfield winning by nearly 80 runs after what looked like a disaster early doors; another promotion challenger seen off.
