Match report Navestock 2s vs Broomfield 2s

On a very picturesque Navestock ground Broomfield batted first. After last week’s cat-astrophe (sorry), John came out of the dressing room with tears streaming down his eyes. We all immediately thought another animal had died, maybe his goldfish this time, but no, he had in fact tried to apply his contact lenses after spraying Agent Orange in his garden earlier in the day. The end result was that Liam Atkins opened with Chris O’Riordan. Both batted through the first 10 overs but didn’t set the scoreboard alight. Liam then went and last week’s hero Matty Mansfield came in at 3 which seemed to give Chris the confidence to push on, either that or he was sobering up from the night before. The score board began to tick over nicely with Chris passing his 50 before Matty went for a solid 18. John had by then dried his tears and the bespectacled Captain went in at 4 to really get things moving. Chris fell for a well hit 77 and was followed soon after by Graham Mansfield, given out bat before wicket by the supposedly league-qualified umpire. Only Andy Pyne added anything significant after that but John carried his bat to the end finishing 67 NO and leading Broomfield to a respectable total of 238/8.

Jack Reilley and Robin Baker opened the bowling and kept Navestock at arms length. The Navestock opener played on off Jack’s bowling but that was the only action from the first 10 overs. Graham Mansfield’s first ball wicket threatened to liven things up but the game drifted into the doldrums after that, with Navestock never really threatening the score. The Broomfield Elders then had a pow wow and John, Gary and Andy decided to choke the life out of Navestock rather than continue to flog the dead horse that was the Navestock wicket; it had, we subsequently found out, been played on for 4 consecutive matches. As such Gary and Andy closed things out and despite the odd lusty blow only one more wicket went down with Navestock plodding to the end, finishing 190/3.

Considering this fixture was a nail biting 3 run last over win for Broomfield earlier in the season it’s fair to say that the return leg didn’t live up to expectations. But a wins a win and it was a very good fielding display on a challenging surface. On to the next match.
