Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Navestock 2nd on Sat 11 May 2019 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 3 runs
Match report
2nd game of the season, Broomfield looking to push on from their opening win. The opposition full of experience, if not youth, put Broomfield into bat first. Captain John and Chris O’Riordan got off to a solid start, with John taking the lead. However any laurels that may have been rested on had their foundations kicked away when Chris fell for another straight ball. John tried to push on but his partners let him down to the point where he was forcing the issue and got run out by a direct hit; his 80 runs posing questions to the opposition, which, like remembering where they had parked the car on their recent Saga holiday, caused problems further down the line.
The Werthers’ Original may have been running out but Navestock’s quality bowling kept going and, with Godfrey from Dad’s Army taking at least 2 catches, a mini collapse ensued to undermine the captain’s good work. Only Andy Pyne and Michael Sawyer threatened the opposition bowling and the latter’s lustily-blowed 13 helped set the Broomfield innings at 161, possibly 20 short of where they should have been.
Broomfield were then in the field and the Reilley’s opened the bowling. Dad Scott was pushing the limits with legal deliveries but his 3rd ball, pitched into no-mans land outside off, was somehow held by Liam Atkins, diving back over his head to claim a worldy. Wild celebrations ensued that were consolidated by Jack Reilley’s testing line and length accounting for the other opener. Navestock No. 4 then came to the crease and was seemingly clean bowled by young Jack to claim his second wicket, however the opposition umpire deemed that in hitting the stumps the ball had dropped a foot from over waist height to the bails; maybe the JFK magic bullet theory has something in it after all?
Being one of the few opponents that didn’t utilise his over 65 bus pass to get to the ground, the No. 4 turned out to be one hell of a bat and soon put the best that Broomfield could offer to the sword. In a 4 over spell he almost took the game away from Broomfield and only an inspired bit of fielding from Scott Reilley, in his customary Covers position, made a direct hit from some bold running that removed the Navestock danger man.
There were still good Batsmen to come and it took some quality bowling from Michael Sawyer to minimise their impact. Andy Pyne then came on for a more successful second spell and, with a well taken catch from Robin Baker, helped swing the evenly poised game back towards Broomfield. The captain even brought himself on towards the end for a tidy spell, claiming a wicket and balancing the match on a precipice: Navestock needing 11 runs off the final over to win. Cometh the hour, cometh the man; but with everyone else having used up their bowling overs captain John had to rely on Robin for the death over. Robin sportingly gave them a 4 first ball but then somehow saw out the rest of the over to hold on and Broomfield to win by 3 runs. A keenly fought contest with many unsung heroes, no more than Matty Mansfield behind the sticks. And Navestock were big enough to enjoy a few beers at the pavilion after, which is what it is all about. Onto the next match!
