Broomfield Cricket Club 1st XI v East Hanngfield & Gt. Burstead 1st on Sat 31 Aug 2019 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won By 5 Wickets
Match report
Last game of the season and it looked a good toss to win, therefore Eglin made sure he lost it and we were put in the field. Fish got us off to a good start removing bother openers for single figures. Then came a partnership between Hughes and Newman who both batted well and the wicket of Newman looked key as he started to accelerate when NC took a bit pace off for him to mistime one to mid wicket. It wasn't easy to get wickets so keeping the score down was the best we could do, keeping them down to 208-7 off their 45. The Dale moment (perhaps harsh as there was some utterly filthy fielding elsewhere) came toward the end of the innings when Rob dropped what would be a fine catch at long on but managed to get the throw in to Dog who had about 3 minutes to walk up to the stumps and run out Hemming but he missed from a yard and hit the the unsuspecting batsman in the head. If that wasn't bad enough for said batsman, Rob got him out in the next over, ouch.
In reply, Dog went relatively soon whilst Eglin was looking steady. A very tight spell from Stevens, including 6 consectutive maidens at the end of his spell kept the rate down in the first half of the innings. However, Eglin had his eye in and went on to score an excellent 91, a shame he bottled a ton in the end. A few good catches from the oppo in the deep made it interesting needing over 60 with 5 wickets left. The old duo of Rich and Bainesy never looked in any trouble though and an unbeaten stand of 65 saw us home for a good win in what was a good natured game, I wonder why it was so different this time around, can't put my finger on it....?
A good end to the season but a case of what might've been had we not been so poor in the 2 previous games. We end up 3rd, well clear of next place and we're gradually improving each season so hopefully push for a title next time around.
