Broomfield Cricket Club 1st XI v Old Chelmsfordians 2nd on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won By 188 Runs
Match report
At last, when most desperately needed Eglin wins a toss. If ever there was a day to bat first it was this game. What looked a youthful and inexperienced opposition took to the field with Eglin and Dog Turner opening. It seemed to be boundary or dot ball for the first 10 or so overs with the runs piling up quickly with the pavilion licking their lips in anticipation of their turn. An opening partnership of 81 came to and end when another 50 bottled by the captain with an absolute shocker of a swipe across the line did for him on 48. In came Rob Lynn who didn't bottle 3 this time, no guesses needed as to why. Dog made it to 50 soon enough but then fell to a tame C&B when he looked set for another gloat, out for 70. Fisher joined Rob who went past 50 relatively quickly and the runs were constant with the young attack getting slapped to most parts. Fish was watchful and didn't want to go too soon to introduce the tail but he missed a straight one falling for 34. Then came the main man, Bun Farrow. After a massive shout first ball where he stepped far enough across to prevent the Goat raising that soon to be used for other purposes index finger, he started to settle in. Rob carried on to his first ton of the season, even if NC couldn't be bothered putting some boundaries to his name. The partnership reached 137 before Rob eventually went for 146 and it was up to Butt to avoid the Dales by lasting the remaining 3 balls. He managed that whilst Farrow survived on 45*. We ended up with 372-4, a mammoth chase for OC's.
Our fears that they wouldn't make a go of it and just bat as long as possible were soon quashed. After Fish removed opener Cook for 0, number 3 Barnstone set about his work in quick time. The Prince got slapped as badly as they did and dropped off his own bowling which clinched a second Dales of the season. Fish removed the other opener with another straight one believe it or not and then it was the 3rd wicket partnership that made it a bit interesting. Boundaries were coming regularly and it needed some world class Goatage to be deployed. Knowing he was enjoying an already golden week, his confidence was high. He removed both the dangermen for 30 and 98 respectively, both holed out on the rope and then he simply set about mopping up with NC at the other end. We soon got through the lower order whilst all in shock that Eglin hadn't brought himself on looking at the standard of number 6 and below. NC chipped in with 3 whilst the Goat had career best figures of 5-48, celebrating with a colonel soon after - oddly enough, he seemed to be treated the way he treats a hot wing later that evening. A thumping win reducing the oppo to 184 a/o. Big game vs top of the league next week.
