Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 3 Wickets

Match report Writtle 2s vs Broomfield 2s

Last league game of the season and whilst we were safely mid table a recent run of defeats meant that we wanted to end on a high, especially as the previous result against this lot ended in a controversial tie. Broomfield won the toss and with Chris O’Riordan back in the team it was a no brainer to bat first. Chris and Jim made a quick start and at 10 overs there were 63 runs on the board with no wickets lost. Jim eventually went for a well hit 23, with his missus about to burst he probably couldn’t afford a long innings. Chris kept going but only served to ruin his average with 54. Liam came and went but Stuart took over and started to hit out until young Noah decided that today was his day to be top batting dog as he raced to his maiden senior half century, then pushed on to a century, finishing on a very impressive 106, batting way above his 15 tender years. In a nice touch his dad joined him in the middle to officially hand over the batting baton, Andy’s 18 helping Noah on his way. Some younger players got a chance at the end as Kush, U13 Alex Collins and Abhi all helped us achieve our highest score of the season, 283/7.

Writtle were up against it but having two of the division’s leading run scorers in their ranks meant there was no room for complacency. Captain Robin and Centurion Noah opened the bowling and Robin drew first blood with an LBW, followed the next ball by a classical edge caught behind by wicket keeper Andy. The hatrick was on but Robin had to wait to get his next victim, who eventually went after a hatrick of ‘not outs’ from Noah, who was unlucky not to claim an early scalp himself. After the openers' good work it became increasingly obvious that Writtle weren’t going to be able to overturn the 283 so the Captain was able to share the bowling around and 2 wickets for Liam, a great ball from Thomas to remove the division’s leading run scorer, then an end of season special from Jim as well as contributions from Andy and Noah meant that we had them all out for 218, keeping them at arms length for the duration in what turned out to be a comfortable win. It’s been a rollercoaster season, a bright start followed by a run of losses then a return to form meaning that we probably finished a bit lower in the league than we deserved. But the colts will return bigger and stronger next year, whilst the rest of us will no doubt just be bigger. On a personal note as captain I thank everyone who took part this season, we all had our moments, I look forward to seeing everyone back for more next year when we can push for promotion. Until then we can forget about who got the most runs or wickets and instead concentrate on who can eat the most poppadoms at the end of season social; the smart money is already on a ‘carb-off’ between Captain and Vice!
