Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Writtle 2nd on Sat 26 Jun 2021 at 1:00
Match was Tied

Match report 5 losses in a row meant that the pressure was on, and losing the toss almost as many times hadn’t helped. So the Captain decided to provoke the cricket God’s bluff by asking the opposition to call and would you know it, we came up trumps; Broomfield batting first! A particularly strong batting line up gave us hope and as the O’Riordans got us to 50/0 after 10 overs it was very much game on. Stuart again didn’t make the most of a good start then Liam struggled to deal with the decent Writtle bowling; it seemed our foot had come off the accelerator. Matty Mansfield, into the fray under orders to hit it , kept to the script as he, and the still In Chris O'Riordan, started to smack it about, just as we needed to.
Chris made his Century, proving that one doesn’t need to be sober to bat after a leaving do the previous night; Broomfield finished 229/8, a decent score leaving it all to do for the opposition.

Writtle had beaten us twice last season so we knew who their danger men were, both Noah and Captain Robin opening the bowling kept things tight with Writtle limited to under 40 after 10 overs. It was clearly going to be close but Robin removed both openers then their No. 4 so the tide was turning towards Broomfield. Writtle were 2nd in the league and no mugs so sure enough their batting depth began to show as, despite losing big wickets, they kept up with the run rate. Their No. 3 was still in and causing problems, regardless of former Captain John’s efforts to hamper his progress via field settings. We needed a hero, and despite Andy throwing down his wicket keeping gloves to take over the bowling, the plaque on the bench has to go to Liam Atkins who bowled an incredible spell that involved not only a hat-trick ball opportunity but also a death over. At 40 overs we’d lost the game but Liam wasn’t having any of it; 2 wickets back to back then having to defend 2 runs off the last over didn’t phase Liam in any way as we got to the final ball of the match with Writtle on 228/9. Yes the last ball could, and maybe should, have been given as a run out but Liam saw us through and a 229 each tie was the end result. With the amount of runs and wicket-related bonus points in play it was as good as a win and most importantly stops the rot of 5 losses in a row. Every run saved in the field mattered and every player showed passion, from young Dara and his economical 5 over spell to the slightly more veteran John showing that he’s still got it with his opening stand. We’ll take the tie and build on this for the rest in the season, which is only half done…watch this space!
