Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Star Cricket on Sat 04 Sep 2021 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 77 runs

Match report Final match of the season, a friendly against the team we'd lost to in a warm up pre-season. That team had 11 players including, we've since found out, a couple of 'ringers' who used to play semi-professionally. However the team that showed up for this match was much reduced and only had 9 players so, with our bowling attack bolstered by 1s regulars Nick & Raj, we felt that a win was on the cards. Raj and Noah started the bowling and kept the openers in check, after 10 overs of the 35 the score was 37/0. The wily openers waited for the change in bowlers then started to hit out, but chances came as Thomas dropped himself off his own bowling then Robin was put down a couple of overs later. Those chances proved costly as the openers pushed on and both made their 50s all while increasing the run rate. Nick eventually got them but his comment of 'you need 5 wickets in this team just to take 2' summed up our collective fielding efforts. More wickets fell with Liam announcing that he was going to 'bowl properly' and his 2 victims were proof that he meant it. Contributions at the end from the returning Noah and Raj got a couple more wickets but the damage had already been done by the openers and a final score of 202 off 35 overs presented quite a challenge.

Stuart and Abhi opened and a bright start was needed which came in the form of Stuart as he matched the required run rate almost single handedly. Unfortunately it was 'first half of the season' Stuart that turned up not the all conquering latter half player so he departed for 15. After that we needed Andy to bat like it was 1997 and for a while he did, but perhaps seeing his eldest son caught for a duck by his youngest (Tristan was kindly helping the opposition in the field as they were short) meant that his mind was more focussed on the arguments to come at home rather than the very wide ball he swiped at to get out. After that the batting went to form as Robin, Lee and Raj all gave their wickets away with low scores. A disgruntled Nick came in at 9, bemoaning the fact that he was batting below the beforementioned names, and was proved right as he carried his bat to the end with 38 not out. We could only manage 125 and the last wicket fell on the penultimate ball of the match to complete the comprehensive defeat.

Disappointing to lose when we should have done much better but it was played in a very good spirit and a few beers were shared at the end, which are what friendlies are all about. We'll have to try and beat them next season instead.
